OBITUARY

On 20 September 1996 the great Hungarian mathematician, Professor Paul Erdős, died. He was a prolific author and source of problems, especially in in number theory and combinatorics. He had been a member of the Editorial Board of this journal for the first twenty months of its existence. His agreement to act in this capacity was typical of the generosity which Professor Erdős showed throughout his peripatetic life towards other mathematicians. Many members of the editorial committee and board had also received personal encouragement in their separate research endeavors, so that both individually and collectively we wish to pay tribute to the memory of one of the great mathematicians of the twentieth century.
